Volkan currently works in the fields of environmental sustainability, circularity, and nature-based solutions. He received his Ph.D. from Bogazici University of İstanbul, then pursued his post-doctoral study at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, İsrael.
He thinks that COST Actions are the platforms, where you can conduct scientific studies with a multi-disciplinary format at the international level.
He believes that industrial symbiosis is one of the key elements of the Circular Economy, where you can observe resource recovery and waste minimization.
Aleksandar Erceg, Ph.D., Associate professor at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Economics and Business in osijek
Currently works as associate professor at Faculty of Economics and Business in Osijek, previously was procurement manager in production company where he was Involved in operations management and sourcing.
He joined LIAISE Cost action to improve the operations management idea in being better, nicer, cheaper and more attractive while having circular economy on mind.
Aleksandar thinks that the importance of industrial symbiosis is evident in the current world situation where resources are scarce and businesses need to find ways to work together, to find the best ways to share resources in the most efficient way and to create relationships without losing sight of the benefits to society as a whole.
Dr. Besa SHAHINI, is a full professor of Applied Statistics at Faculty of Economy, University of Tirana, Albania. Her research interest is multidisciplinary and focused on metrics of Sustainable Development, Innovation and Wellbeing. She joined the LIAISE Cost Action on Industrial Symbiosis to explore economic models of sustainability and efficiency, fostering a circular economy that benefits both industry and environment, and aligns with her commitment to economic science for societal advancement and public engagement.
She strongly believes that Industrial Symbiosis is crucial for optimizing resource use, reducing waste, and fostering innovation, leading to economic savings, environmental benefits, and enhanced competitiveness in a shift towards a sustainable, circular economy.
WG2 Co-Leader. Istemi BERK, PhD.
Istemi is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Business, Dokuz Eylul
University, Türkiye. He joined the LIAISE Cost Action to engage with international stakeholders to determine barriers and enablers for implementing an effective
Industrial Symbiosis Business Model. Istemi believes that Industrial Symbiosis will encourage co-creation approaches among different stakeholders in the industrial value-chains for innovative solutions that foster sustainable growth.
Prof. Ing. Jiří Strouhal, Ph.D., WG4 – co-leader
Jiří is a full professor of Skoda Auto University and lectures in the field of financial reporting, ESG reporting and corporate finance. Between 2011 – 2021 he served as President of an Association of Czech Professional Accountants.
The multidisciplinary and cross-border format of Actions is vital for conducting research in the field of industrial symbiosis, circular economy, corporate social responsibility and ESG reporting.
I believe that IS leads to more sustainable and efficient use of resources, which not only saves money but also reduces environmental impact by waste minimisation and the consumption of raw materials. Also I can see IS as an engine of future industrial innovations.
